We have adapted our Truss and Plate Girder designs to produce bridges which are not unfamiliar on railways around the world. By placing the cross beams and track way on the top of the plate girders we have a bridge which provides a clear unobstructed view of the trains as they cross whilst retaining an interesting and authentic appearance. Generally although it is an extremely strong design we would suggest it would normally be used on relatively short spans with the open deck truss design for spans over 1 metre.
It is important to specify the span required accurately. If the bridge supports are to be built to accommodate the bridge the actual span is not crucial. However, if the bridge is required to fit between existing uprights the span must be specified exactly to enable the bridge to be constructed with a snug fit between the uprights. Provision must also be made for the overall depth of the bridge. Ledges will be required to support the bridge at the correct track level. We use 80mm deep side plates for our plate girder bridges. Each bridge is individually made by hand. It is supplied in its bare metal state and can be left to weather naturally or you can prime and paint it. Note we don't supply it highly polished! It bears minor scratches and scuffs from the process of construction which certainly do not detract from the appearance of the bridge.
Longitudinal plates are placed at a suitable distance to support 32mm and 45mm gauge track. The bridge does not include any decking but you could easily add your own wooden planking or a zinc diamond pattern grid. The length of the bridge allows it to be supported by the end 10-20mm of the beams. The bridge is supplied fully constructed as shown in the photos. Obviously the rolling stock and track are shown for scale purposes only and are not included. Concrete moulded bridge supports shown in some illustrations can be obtained from Cain Howley Structures. |
