Largely an American development, the various forms of the truss bridge can be seen on railways throughout the world. The Through Truss is less common in the UK however the lower Pony Truss design we have here is quite at home in the narrow gauge setting.
The bridge is carefully constructed in a range of aluminium sections The design follows full size practice based on the Pratt Truss configuration invented in 1844 with vertical members and diagonal sections that slope towards the centre. This is a very sturdy construction, well capable of carrying heavy locos over a full metre span. The intricate detail makes the Pony Truss Bridge a centre of interest on any garden line. All our bridges are individually made by hand. It is supplied in its bare metal state and can be left to weather naturally over time or you can prime and paint it. We can also get your bridge powder coated if required. Note we don't supply it highly polished! It will bear minor scratches and scuffs from the process of construction - however these do not detract from the appearance of the bridge.
Longitudinal plates or angles are placed at a suitable distance to support 32mm and/or 45mm gauge track. The bridge does not include any decking but you could easily add your own wooden planking or a zinc diamond pattern grid. The length of the bridge allows it to be supported by the end 10-20mm of the beams. The bridge is supplied fully constructed as shown in the photos. Rolling stock and track are shown for scale purposes only and are not included! We would be happy to make custom bridges of this design. The width can be varied to suit the smaller Mamod size rolling stock or increased to provide a double track. |
